Letha Almeda Nantz

October 23, 1920 — May 12, 2017

Letha Almeda Marks Nantz, age 96 of Alvin, Texas passed away Friday, May 12, 2017 at Winchester Lodge Nursing Facility in Alvin. Letha was born October 23, 1920 in Fleming, Colorado and was a resident of Alvin for the last 20 years. Letha grew up on the family farm in Logan County Colorado not far from the town of Sterling. The family was involved in community and church activities. At a young age, Letha felt God’s calling in her life. This led her to become a teacher in the Red Bird Missionary Conference located in the mountains of eastern Kentucky. She began teaching at the Beech Fork Settlement School in the 1940’s. After WWII, when a handsome young soldier name Homer Howard Nantz returned from war, she met her future husband. They married in 1949 and continued to live, love, and work in the Beech Fork Community. Letha taught at Stinnet Elementary and Beech Fork Elementary schools teaching first grade for most of her 29 years in the Leslie County School System. Letha was a member of the Beech Fork United Methodist Church. She was active as a church member and leader teaching Sunday School, leading Vacation Bible School, and serving in various capacities in the United Methodist Women organization on the local, state, and national level. She was also active in 4-H and served as a leader for many years teaching many young girls to sew. She lived in Kentucky over 50 years until the death of her husband. A desire to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren brought her to Alvin Texas. Letha became a member of First United Methodist Church in Alvin. She quickly became involved in her new church home and community. She enjoyed bible studies, her Sunday School class, sewing, baking, puzzles, and reading. She especially enjoyed her participation in the prayer quilt ministry. Letha will be dearly missed by all of those who knew her. Her family is especially thankful for those dear friends who continued to brighten her days until the end. The names are too numerous to mention.
