Liz, known affectionately by her family as “Sammy” was born in Hyden, Leslie County and was delivered by the Frontier Nursing Service. The bronze statue in Hyden commemorating Mary Breckinridge with a young girl bears a striking resemblance to Sammy as a child. Her mother, Bess Lewis Dixon was a close friend of Mary Breckinridge. While Sammy’s husband was serving in Vietnam, Sammy and her daughter Kelli stayed with her father Robert Lee Dixon for a year at the old home place. She will best be remembered for daring all those who crossed her siblings to meet her at the peach tree of the family farm, her wonderful wit and her uncanny ability to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
