Polly Maggard

Mrs. Polly Wells Maggard born January 06, 1935 departed this life on Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at her residence - Smilax, Ky. She was 80 years old. Polly was born in Leslie County, Ky., the daughter of the late Floyd Wells & Alpha Browning Wells. Polly retired as post mistress of the Smilax, Ky., post office after 40 year of distinguished service. It was published she was the youngest post-mistress in the United States at one time. She also served as the secretary of her family's business, the Floyd Wells Coal & Land Co. Polly was very active in community and civic affairs. She was founder of the CREEK organization, the Leslie County Museum, served on the boards of the Appalachian motel, KRAD, Leslie County Soil Conversation, treasurer of the Leslie Co. Post Masters Club & member of the Ben Franklin Stamp Club. Polly was a devoted member of the Hyden Church of God, where she also taught Sunday School. Mrs. Polly Wells Maggard was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers; Clinton, Denver, George, Elmer Wells & wife, Ruby, one sister; Lena Morgan. Mrs. Polly Wells Maggard leaves the following relatives surviving: her loving and devoted husband, Chris Maggard of Smilax, Ky. two sons; Cova Maggard and wife, Carmen, George Maggard and wife, Lorraine, one daughter, Christy Sexton & husband, Jeffery, all of Wooton, Ky., three brothers; Burley Wells & wife, Freda of Wooton, Ky., Otis Wells and wife, Lois of London, Ky., Richard Wells and wife, Gail of Wooton, Ky., four sisters; Viola Pollard of Wooton, Ky., Irene Engle and husband, Felix, of Middletown, Ohio, Doris Williams and husband, Otis of Keavy, Ky., Lorraine France of Smilax, Ky., sister-in-law; Janneth Wells of Smilax, Ky., eight grandchildren; Patrick Couch and wife, Wanda, Kelly Couch, Christopher Maggard and wife, Cynthia, David Maggard, Ben Maggard, Allen Maggard, Clifton Maggard and wife, Krishena, Gwen Maggard Ogle & husband, Jeremy, five great-grandchildren; Cierra, Chandler, Makendrah, Lucas & Cecilia along with a host of other treasured relatives and friends.
