Courtesy Obituary for Mr. Burley Young Burley Young, age 86, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away March 14, 2013. Burley was born December 30, 1926 at the Young family homestead in Owls nest, near Hyden, Kentucky, to the late Dan and Tempie (Collins) Young. Burley was the fourth of 13 children. He is survived by his sons, Kenneth F. Young of Denver, Colorado and Ralph D. Young of Carbondale, Colorado; Brothers Mannon, Edward, Paul, Noah and David; Sisters Polly Hoskins, Matilda Couch, Berniece Edgert, Vestie Osborne , Vadis Couch and a host of nieces , nephews, other relatives and friends. Brothers Henry and Robert preceded him in death. Burley left Hyden in 1943 and joined the Army in April of 1945. He served the United States for 20 years in Europe, Korea and stateside. While in the army, Burley was among the first male nurses to serve and was instrumental in creating the armys nursing training program. In the 1950s he served as chief ward master at Walter Reed Hospital. Upon retirement from the military, Burley continued to serve as a medical technician at the Armed Forces Exam and Entrance Station in Denver until his second retirement in 1982. He enjoyed working on cars, hunting, fishing and, in his later years, playing senior softball. A memorial service is scheduled for March 26th at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Aurora, Colorado and an internment ceremony will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado, on March 29th.
