The obituary of Mrs. Marguerite June Zarfos Howard Officiating Ministers: Rev. Chuck Jack, Rev. Phillip Bell & Rev. Teddy Brock Mrs. Marguerite June Zarfos Howard born on June 4, 1923 departed this life on December 31, 2009 at the Mary Breckinridge Hospital, Hyden, Ky. She was 86 years old. Marguerite was born in Folkston, Georgia the daughter of the late Louis Norman Zarfos and the late Luira Diehl Zarfos. The Zarfos family moved to Pennsylvania while Marguerite was very young & she spent her formative years in Pennsylvania. She was a graduate of Ambler University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania & was awarded her bachelor's degree at North Central College in Chicago, Illinois. Marguerite received her masters' degree of Library Science from Union College, & her masters' degree of elementary education from Cumberland College. Marguerite's great desire to continue her education was evident as she financed her college education by constructing a greenhouse & selling plants. Marguerite moved to the Red Bird Mission at Beverly, KY., in 1950 through her involvement with Evangelical United Brethren & a life -long desire to be involved in the lives of children. She had a very distinguished educational career, having been employed by the Leslie Co. Board of Education & in the years preceding her retirement by the Harlan Co. Board of Education as a teacher & librarian. She was a member of the retired teachers' association. Marguerite was a devoted & very active member of the Upper Beech Fork United Methodist Church, Helton, Ky., & maintained a close affiliation with her home church, St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Red Lion Pennsylvania. Marguerite served on numerous boards & represented Upper Beech Fork United Methodist Church & Red Bird at many Methodist conferences. Marguerite was very active in her community & county; having served on the Frontier Nursing Service Board & the local homemakers' club. Marguerite took great pride in her involvement & leadership of the l Camp Fire Girls Chapter of Red Lion, Pennsylvania. Marguerite enjoyed playing the flute & piano, as a hobby. She was preceded in death by her parents Louis and Luira Zarfos. her loving & devoted husband: Marcus DeLafayette Howard whom she was united in marriage on September 15, 1951 at St. Pauls United Methodist Church in Red Lion, PA., one son: Dwight David, step children: Evelyn Wilson, Herbert Howard and Lavonne Hendrickson. She leaves surviving the following relatives two sons: Mark Louis Howard and Robin of Spain, Elisha Todd Howard and Marina of Helton, KY, four daughters: Melba Jenifer Howard of Muncy, IN, Kimberly Zarfos Howard of Standford, KY, Lucinda Carol Howard of Lexington, KY, Lura Wenona Simpson of Helton, KY, one step-daughter: Jacqueline Dunn of Republic OH, one sister: Jean Kline of Beaver Spring, PA, ten grandchildren: Quentin Nantz, Spencer Nantz, Jonathan Nantz, Carl Marc Wells, Sifra Howard, Prisca Howard, Caleb Howard, Ethan Howard, Rachel Howard and Brandi Maggard, and nine great grandchildren. Marguerite was also survived by a host of treasured step-grandchildren, step-great grandchildren & of other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Marguerite June Zarfos Howard will be at 2 p.m. Saturday - January 2, 2010 at the Upper Beech Fork United Methodist Church at Helton, KY. with Rev. Chuck Jack, Rev. Phillip Bell and Rev. Teddy Brock officiating. Interment will follow in the Howard Family Cemetery at Helton, KY. Visitation will begin at 12 Noon Saturday - January 2, 2010 at the Upper Beech Fork united Methodist Church.
