The Obituary of Mrs. Verna Couch Messer Officiating Minister: Rev. Henry Clay Robertson Mrs. Verna Couch Messer was born on March 1, 1950 in Leatherwood, KY. and passed away on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Mary Breckinridge ARH. She was 63 years of age at the time of her passing. Verna was the Daughter of the late Boyd Couch and the late Cora Stidham Couch and was the Widow of the late Stoney Messer. By occupation Verna was a LPN at Mary Breckinridge Hospital and an Assistant Postmaster at Busy, KY. Verna received numerous awards from the Leslie Co. Area Technology School where she received her LPN educational training & graduated in 1982. She completed the Licensed Practical Nursing Program at the Hazard State Vocational - Technical School in 1983. Perkins Congressional Award & Scholarship She returned to Mary Breckinridge Hospital in Hyden to work until her retirement. She served on the Leslie County Area Technology Services Program Advisory Committee for 25 years. She also served as a judge for the Local VICA and HOSA Competitions for many years. Verna was commissioned as a KY Colonel & was recognized as a Honorary Flight Nurse. Verna was a life-long resident of Perry & Leslie Counties and was a Member of the Confluence Baptist Church in Hyden, KY. She was Preceded in Death by: Parents: Boyd Couch & Cora Stidham Couch;Loving and Devoted Husband: Stoney Messer; Sister: Imogene Baker. Verna is survived by the following relatives: Sons: Raymond Edward Messer, Stoney Wayne Messer & Rita and Cheyenne Messer all of Busy, KY.; Daughter: Barbara Black & John of Michigan; Brothers: Harlin Couch & Wilma of Wooton, KY., Russell Couch of Leatherwood, KY. and Mickey Couch & Missy of Maces Creek (Perry County), KY.; Sisters: Helen Ely of VA. and Freda Johnson & Bill of Buffalo, NY.; Grandchildren: Amy, Angie, Brandon, John & Austin; 8 Great Grandchildren also survive along with a host of other treasured relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Verna Couch Messer will be conducted on Friday ~ March 15, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the Dwayne Walker Funeral Home with Rev. Henry Clay Robertson officiating. Burial will follow in the Messer~Stidham Family Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday ~ March 14, 2013 from 6:00-9:00 P.M. at the Dwayne Walker Fumeral Home.
