In 1940, a nineteen year old Bob traded the shores of the Middle Fork River to the shores of England and France when he enlisted in the United States Army. As well as practicing law, with the encouragement of his father-in-law McKinley Roark, Bob dabbled in politics. In the late 1950's he had an unsuccessful run at state representative. In 1958 he ran and won the office of the Leslie County Attorney, which he held, without opposition, until 1978. With the formation of the Kentucky District Courts in 1978, Bob ran and was elected the first District Court Judge for the Forty-first Judicial District comprised of Clay, Leslie, and Jackson counties. Bob served as a District Court Judge from January 1, 1978 until his retirement in December 1989. During Bob and Edith's retirement they enjoyed spending time with their children, and grandchildren, and also enjoyed traveling.
