Mrs. Jean Lewis Elam

The Obituary of Mrs. Jean Lewis Elam Mrs. Jean Bernice Lewis Elam born November 13, 1917 departed this life on Friday, April 26, 2013 at the Greg & Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center, Hazard, Ky. She was 95 years old. Jean was born at Miller, South Dakota, the daughter of the late David Lewis & Bernice Jewett Lewis. Jean was a a graduate of Huron College, Huron South Dakota & the McCormick Seminary, Chicago, Illinois in 1942. She worked as a Christian educator from 1942- 1947 in Sparta, Tennessee. Jean became a resident of Hyden, Ky. in 1947 & was united in marriage to her late husband, Mr. Roscoe Elam. Jean was the co-owner & operator of Elam's Department Store-- a Hyden landmark, with her husband, Roscoe for many years. She served as a social worker for KRADD before her retirement. Jean was very active in her community. She held various leadership roles & received numerous awards for her professionalism in civic and community work. Jean was a devoted & active lay leader & member of the Central Presbyterian Church, Hyden, Ky. She held many positions in the church including elder, trustee, & youth leader. Jean will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Mrs. Jean Elam was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Roscoe Elam & her beloved daughter: Nellie Elam Smith. Mrs. Jean Lewis Elam leaves the following relatives surviving: four daughters: Mary Elam Rodriguez & husband, Jorge of Maple Glen, Pennsylvania, Sarah Elizabeth Elam of Hyden, Ky., Ellen Elam Pittman of Tempe, Arizona, Ina Sue Elam Osborne & husband, David, of Trenton, Ohio, eight treasured grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, & a host of nieces and nephews. The memorial service for Mrs. Jean Elam will be conducted 1:00 P.M. - Friday - May 3, 2013 at the Central Presbyterian Church, Hyden, Ky. with Rev. Richard Guerrant officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the service at 1:00 p.m. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Central Presbyterian Church, P.O.
