The Obituary for Mrs. Lela Turner Keen Officiating Ministers: Rev. Wiley Scott Keen & Rev. Battle A. Beasley Mrs. Lela Turner Keen was born on February 2, 1922 in Yeaddiss,Ky.the daughter of the late Robert E. Lee & Rebecca Madden Turner. Lela passed away on January 11, 2010 at the Eastern Kentucky Veterans Center in Hazard, Ky. at the age of 87 years, 11 months & 9 days. Lela spent her formative years in Leslie Co. & was a life-long resident, having lived at 120 Cherry St., Hyden, Ky. She was a graduate of the Nazareth School of Nursing, affiliated with the St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington, KY. By occupation Lela was co-owner & operators of Keen's Variety Store in Hyden with her husband,Wiley Ray Keen, Jr. & later with her sons, Kenneth & Johnny Ray. She was a veteran of WWII where she served honorably in the U.S. Army Air Corps, as a registered nurse. She was a devoted and faithful member of the Central Presbyterian Church in Hyden, where she had served on the session & Board of Trustees, & taught Sunday School. She was also a former member of the Eastern Star. Lela was very active in her local community & had a very distinguished record of service. She served on the Hyden City Council, Hyden-Leslie Water Board, Library Board & also worked with the Drug Education in Leslie Co. She held the position of Director of the Leslie Co. Health Dept. screening in the late 1960s. Lela Turner Keen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Mr. Wiley Ray Keen, Jr.,two Infant siblings, one son: Kenneth Keen & Three brothers: Dodson, Dillard Davis & John Turner & four sisters: Dophia Turner, Grace Busby, Joan Noble & Jean Singleton. She leaves the following relatives surviving: one son: Johnny Ray Keen of Hyden, Ky., one daughter: Deborah Keen Matthews of Bowling Green, Ky.,one brother: Bill Turner of Arizona,one sister: Della Shaw of Fairfield, Ohio, four grandchildren: Wiley Scot Keen, Kara Keen Johnson, Kristin Sikes & Joel Matthews & 10 great-grandchildren: John Wiley Keen, Jodi Johnson, Elle Johnson, Emmett Johnson, Emily Johnson, Jake Johnson, Jack Sikes, III, Emmerson Sikes, Royal Matthews & Madison Keen & a special cousin: Mae Combs of Hyden, Ky. Funeral services for Mrs. Lela Turner Keen will be conducted by The Dwayne Walker Funeral Home on Thursday, January 14, 2010 at 1:00 P.M.at the Central Presbyterian Church in Hyden, Ky., with Rev. Wiley Scott Keen & Rev. Battle A. Beasley officiating. Interment will follow in the Keen-Woods family Cemetery at Dryhill, Ky., with full military rites observed by the Leslie Co. D.A.V. Chapter # 133. The following will serve as pallbearers: Jack Sikes, Joel Matthews, James Street, Rev. Scot Keen, Monty Turner, Randy Turner, Gary Singleton & David Rader. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at the Dwayne Walker Funeral Home beginning at 6:00 P.M. In Lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Central Presbyterian Church, P.O.
