Brandon Scott Fortney, a cherished member of the Hyden community and a dedicated former coal miner, passed away on April 3, 2025, at Mary Breckinridge ARH. He was born on August 24, 1977, in Lexington, Kentucky, where he cultivated his love for the outdoors and a passion for mechanics and auto repair.
Brandon's career as a coal miner at Black Hawk Mining and Blue Diamond Coal was a testament to his hardworking nature. Colleagues and friends described him as outgoing and friendly, qualities that made a lasting impression on those who knew him. His zest for life was shown through his interests, especially his love for hunting and fishing, which he enjoyed immensely during his time with friends and family.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his former wife and the mother of his children, Dawn Howard Fortney including her children: Jemma Lewis and Jaylon Clark. Brandon was a devoted father to his son, Preston Scott Fortney of Richmond, and his daughter, Bailey Reannin Fortney of Fleming Neon. He is also survived by his loving and devoted parents, Fred and Diana Wooton Fortney, who provided him with a nurturing and devoted upbringing.
Brandon's legacy will be remembered by his close friends, Larry Mosley and Quint Smith, with whom he shared many memorable moments. He also had a special bond with his niece, McKenzie, the daughter of his late sister, Jennifer Lynn Fortney, who predeceased him.
He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Preston and Maude Stidham Fortney, his maternal grandparents, Tinsley and Edna Roark Wooton, and his loving sister: Jennifer Lynn Fortney.
The visitation for Brandon will take place on April 9, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Walker Funeral Home in Hyden, Kentucky. This will be followed by a funeral service celebrating his life at the same location at 1:00 pm. with Larry 'Squeaky' Turner officiating. Burial will take place at the Roberts Cemetery in Hyden, Kentucky.
Brandon Scott Fortney's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who loved him, including family, friends, Quentin Smith, Larry Mosley and Steve Bales and the community he cherished. His warmth and kindness will be dearly missed.
