Hilda Carol Asher, cherished wife, mother, grandmother, devout Christian, and friend was called to her heavenly home on March 9, 2024 at 8:50 am at Hospice Care Plus in Richmond, KY at the age of 67. Hilda was born on September 23, 1956 in Hazard, KY, the daughter of the late Bruce Baker and the late Zilpha Morgan Baker. Hilda’s unwavering love for the Lord and immense care for her family gave her strength, and her warmhearted and generous spirit was known by all who knew her.
After graduating from Leslie County High School with vocational training, Hilda moved to London, KY, where her first job at age eighteen was as a keypunch operator for Appalachian Computer Services. Thereafter, she worked for two years as a Senior Clerk Stenographer in the Division of Licensing and Regulations within the Bureau for Social Services in London. After these positions, Hilda returned to Hyden, where she served as the Private Secretary for the Director of the Frontier Nursing Service, Dr. Rogers Beasley. After this position, Hilda continued to work for the Frontier Nursing Service as a Typist for Medical Directives and aided the Directives Committee with formatting and overall contributions to their final products. After five years of employment, Hilda chose to leave the workforce to raise and nurture her children and family full-time.
Hilda’s greatest joys in life were being a mother, supporting her family, building a loving home, serving the Lord, and supporting her church community. She was a faithful and devoted member of the Rockhouse Pentecostal Church for over forty years, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and Youth Leader in the early years of her membership. She made many lifelong friends in the church on whom she leaned and whom she loved dearly.
Hilda loved to cook for her family and friends, and she valued generosity and kindness, exemplified by the thoughtful gifts that she diligently selected for those she knew and those in need. Hilda loved spending time in nature and admiring the flowers that she planted with her husband around their home.
In grieving the loss, Hilda is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 48 years, Curtis J. Asher of Hyden, KY. Her beloved sons, Kevin Curtis Asher and his wife Holly of London, KY, Wesley Brian Asher of New York, NY, and Austin Bruce Asher of London, KY, also mourn the loss of their dear mother. Hilda is also survived by her three cherished sisters, Sandra Kay Begley of London, KY, Melissa Faye Hensley and her husband Clellan of Hyden, KY, and Peggy Jean Barger and her husband Don of Stinnett, KY as well as her treasured grandchildren, Brylee Ella Raine Asher and Brixton Curtis Asher of London, KY. Hilda is also survived by a host of other relatives and friends.
Hilda’s greatest character and first line of thinking was what can I do for someone else. Hilda received comfort in reading Psalm 23, and especially verse 6: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”
