James Ray Smith, a life-long resident of Leslie County and beloved member of the Essie community, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2024 at the Hazard Appalachian Regional Hospital at the age of 71. James was born in Essie on December 5, 1952, the son of the late Omus Smith and Virgie Morgan. James was an experienced truck driver and exceptional strip mine heavy equipment operator.
In addition to his dedicated work, James loved spending time with his family and enjoying different facets of life. He was an avid hunter, especially coon hunting, and cooked out frequently. He also enjoyed riding four wheelers.
Faith was also an integral aspect to James as he was affiliated with the Grassy Branch Pentecostal Church.
Along with his father and mother, James was preceded in death by his beloved brothers Bonell and Denzil Smith, along with his sisters; Elsie Bowling, Alma Jean Napier, and Lillian Smith and brother-in-law, Sid Whitehead.
James leaves the following loved ones surviving; his loving and devoted wife of 51 years, Marietta Smith of Essie, KY, one son; James David Smith and wife Amy of Essie, KY, two daughters; Melissa Rae Smith Napier and husband Pat of Essie, and Chassidy Smith and Cecil Morgan of Essie. One brother; Claude Smith and wife Alice of Big Creek, KY, three sisters; Pearline Whitehead of Essie, KY, Rose Howard of London, KY, Carolyn Hacker and husband Tony of Essie, Deanna Shepherd and husband Jerry of Manchester, KY, Eight grandchildren, Jared David Smith, Cheyenne Hensley and husband Camron, Alyssa Smith, Courtney Smith, Hailey BreAnna Napier, Connor Gage Napier, Austin Trey Wilson and wife Breanne, and Presley Raquelle Napier and husband Ryan, five great grandchildren; Cooper Hensley, Averi Jaymes Hensley, Cruz Hensley, Haven Wilson, and Nevaeh Wilson. James is also survived by a host of other nieces and nephews.
Funeral: Sunday, April 7, 2024 — 1:00 p.m. at the Stinnett Gap Church of God
Interment: Smith Family Cemetery, Essie, KY.
