Josephine Lewis Engle, a beloved member of her family and community, passed away peacefully at the Compassionate Care Center in Richmond, Kentucky on September 30, 2023. She was born on March 15, 1938, in Smilax, Kentucky, where she established roots that would grow deep and touch the lives of many. Josephine was a former resident of Hyden, Kentucky and had been living in Richmond, Kentucky since December of 2019.
Josephine's journey through life was one marked by unwavering faith, Hard work, and devotion to her family. She found solace and inspiration in attending church as a member of the Cutshin Bible Church in Yeaddiss, Kentucky. This dedicated commitment to her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, shaped her character and guided her actions throughout her life.
In addition to her love of gardening and homemaking, she cherished every moment with her husband and three daughters.
She was preceded in death by her loving and devoted husband of 65 years, Clarence Engle. Also preceding were parents, Taylor and Manerva Day Lewis; sisters Eunice Lewis, Rose Feltner, Georgia Kilburn, Lelia Lewis and Clydia Combs. Also, one brother; Willie Lewis.
She leaves behind the following: three daughters, Rhonda Engle Brashear and Fred of Richmond, Kentucky; Janice Engle Kilburn and Karl of Paris, Kentucky; Dinah Engle Scott and David of Lago Vista, Texas.
She is also survived by six grandchildren, Joel Brashear (Tracie), Kristy Kilburn Carter (John), Rachel Brashear Combs (John Christopher), Salena Kilburn Hurter (John Louis), Amanda Scott and Alex Scott (Cammi). Ten great grandchildren, Tripp, Chloe, and Clark Brashear; Juliana, Jaxen, and Jensen Combs; Max and Kit Carter; Graham Hurter, Lyla Scott, and one on the way.
Also surviving is her treasured and beloved sister; Rebecca Morgan of Hyden, Kentucky.
To honor and celebrate Josephine's life, a visitation will be held at the Dwayne Walker Funeral Home on October 5, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. The funeral service will follow at the same location at 11:00 AM. with John Newell, Craig Morgan & Rev. Billy Joe Lewis officiating. The interment will take place at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery South East in Hyden, Kentucky after the funeral service. Full military rites will be observed for her husband, Clarence Engle with Josephine's committal service. This observance of Clarence's military rites was delayed due to the pandemic.
The following will serve as pallbearers: W.F. "Fred" Brashear II, Karl Kilburn, David Scott, Joel Brashear, Alex Scott, John Carter, John Christopher Combs and John Louis Hurter.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Leslie County D.A.V. (Chapter #133), PO Box 197 Hyden, Kentucky 41749.
