Mrs. Kathleen Feltner Lewis, widow of the late William Nickles “Nick” Lewis Jr., 25 Cherry St., Hyden, Ky., born November 17, 1921, in Coon Creek, Leslie County Kentucky. She was the fourth of ten children, daughter of the late Felix and Ona Maggard Feltner. Kathleen departed this life on Sunday, March 6, 2022, at the Mary Breckinridge Hospital in Hyden. She was 100 years of age at the time of her passing.
As a young lady, Kathleen attended the first Camp Nathanael, held at the Girl’s Dormitory in Hyden in 1932. She graduated from Leslie County High School and later attended Eastern Kentucky University and business college in Louisville. After completing her coursework, Kathleen remained in Louisville and worked at the Children’s Hospital. Kathleen and her beloved husband, William “Nick” Lewis Jr. were married on September 22, 1947.They moved to Corpus Christi, Texas in 1954 and were residents there until 1984, with the exception of a short stint in Elizabethtown, Ky. Kathleen and Nick moved back to Hyden in 1984. Kathleen and Nick shared 65 years before his passing in 2013.
Kathleen was a devoted and faithful member of the Central Presbyterian Church in Hyden, where she held the office of Elder, as well as serving as Treasury Auditor, Sunday school teacher and Bible Study leader.
Kathleen was a life-long learner. She believed in the importance of education, and for many years helped to administer the annual Begley Family Scholarship for Leslie County High school seniors. She was a noted genealogist and expert in Leslie County and Eastern Kentucky history. Kathleen enjoyed reading and was an early proponent of health and wellness. She was a treasure to her family, friends and community.
Kathleen Feltner Lewis was preceded in death by her parents, Felix and Ona Maggard Feltner; a son: William Nickles Lewis III, a brother: Denver (Mary Kathryn) Feltner; sisters: Fern (Emmitt) Elam; Leila (Elmer) Begley; Elsie (John) Baird, and Jean Begley. Survivors include two grandsons: Todd Lewis and wife, Tamra of Lake Barrington, Illinois and Kevin Lewis of Valencia, California; two great granddaughters: Emily & Madeline Lewis; two brothers: Dillard (Fannie) Feltner of Lake Worth, Florida and Herbert (Sue) Feltner of Indianapolis, Indiana; two sisters: Faye Feltner of Louisville, Kentucky and Betty (Ken) Leggett of Eddyville, Kentucky and cherished cousin: Mae Parker of Hyden, Ky In addition, a host of nieces & nephews survive.
