Margaret Sue Stacy Hightower, a beloved matriarch, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2024, at the Greg & Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center, Hazard, KY. She was 88 years old. Sue was born on January 7, 1936, in McClure, Virginia, the daughter of the late George K. Stacy & Pearlie Adams Stacy. Margaret Sue had been a resident of Leslie County for over 68 years. Her family first residence was at Ritter's Camp in Hyden. Margaret Sue embraced life with elegance and kindness, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her.
Margaret Sue's professional journey was marked by her significant contributions to various local institutions. She dedicated herself to serving the community through her roles at the Leslie County Telephone Company, Mary Breckinridge Hospital, and ultimately retired from Hyden Citizens Bank. Her strong work ethic and commitment to her employers exemplified her dedication and sense of responsibility.
A woman of great faith, Margaret Sue was an indispensable partner to her late husband, Rev. James Hightower. Together, they contributed to the ministry at the Muncy Creek Baptist Church and the Short Creek Mission. Margaret Sue's rich voice resonated through the halls of their church as she shared her talent by singing solos and participating in church groups. Her musical gift extended beyond the church; she sang at numerous weddings and funerals, often lifting spirits with her performances of the National Anthem at Leslie County High athletic events.
Margaret Sue earned her Associate Degree, demonstrating her belief in education and personal growth. Her pursuit of knowledge was mirrored in her vibrant personality. She was known for her welcoming and humble nature, always taking time to extend warmth to others. With a refined sense of fashion, she not only looked elegant but also inspired those around her to appreciate beauty in life.
Family was the cornerstone of Margaret Sue's existence. Her days were brightened by visits from her cherished granddaughter, Staci Farmer, and her great-grandson, Henry Parker Farmer. Margaret took immense pride in her family, often expressing her love and admiration for them. She is survived by her loving son, Julian Hightower and wife Sandy of Cumberland, Kentucky, and her treasured daughter, Suzanne Hightower Melton and husband Scott of Wooton, Kentucky, treasured granddaughter Staci Farmer and husband Brent, and treasured great-grandson Henry Parker Farmer. Additionally, she leaves behind her sister, Betty Ann Ponder and husband Foster of Melbourne, Florida, along with a host of other treasured relatives and friends.
Margaret Sue is predeceased by her loving husband, Rev. James Hightower, to whom she was united in marriage to on June 29, 1957,her parents George K. Stacy and Pearly Adams, and her siblings Harold Stacy, L.B. Stacy, Mary Lillian Hurt, Naomi Ruth Watson, and Melda Faye Sizemore. Her absence will be deeply felt, but the memories of her nurturing spirit and radiant presence will remain cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
Visitation to honor Margaret Sue's life will be held on December 31, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Walker Funeral Homes, LLC, located at 155 Hickory Street, Hyden, Kentucky. A funeral service to celebrate her memory will take place on January 1, 2025, at 12:00 PM, with Rev. Kelly Fields officiating. The interment will follow the service in the Brewer Cemetery, Wooton, KY., next to her beloved husband, Rev. James Hightower. The following will serve as pallbearers: Butch Barger, Samuel Barger, Brent Farmer, Doug Pack & Craig Asher. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Muncy Creek Baptist Church, C/O P.O. Box 948 Hyden, KY 41749.
Margaret Sue Stacy Hightower leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and dedication that will continue to inspire future generations. She will be dearly missed but forever remembered in the hearts of her family and friends.
