Phyllis Kilburn, a beloved daughter, sister & aunt passed away on October 6, 2023, in Hazard, KY. She spent her formative years at Wooton, KY and her adulthood in Hazard, KY She was born on April 15, 1946, in Frew, KY, to Carter Kilburn and Eliza Melton Kilburn. Phyllis dedicated an incredible 48 years of her life to her profession as a registered nurse.
Phyllis began her nursing career after earning her nursing degree from the School of Nursing in Harlan, KY. Over the course of her remarkable career, she worked at both Mount Mary Hospital and Hazard Appalachian Regional Medical Center. Her passion for nursing led her to serve in various roles as she transitioned from working on the floor to assuming a supervisory position. Phyllis's commitment and dedication to her patients were unparalleled.
As a mentor for nurses, Phyllis left an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to learn from her guidance. The relationships she built with fellow employees were characterized by love and concern, embodying her nurturing and caring nature. Phyllis's proudest accomplishments included the impact she made on the lives of others through her invaluable mentorship.
Phyllis's love for her profession was only surpassed by the love she held for her family. Family meant everything to Phyllis, and she treasured spending time with them. Her nieces and nephews were particularly dear to her heart, as she considered them as if they were her own children.
Outside of work and family, Phyllis enjoyed indulging in two simple pleasures: traveling and shopping. These activities brought an extra sparkle to her eyes and allowed her to explore new places and discover new treasures.
Phyllis will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her nurturing spirit, caring demeanor, and genuine personality touched the lives of many. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion that will continue to inspire and guide those she has left behind. She was a member of the Hurts Creek Church of Christ.
Phyllis Kilburn's funeral service will be held on October 13, 2023, at Walker Funeral Homes, LLC, located at 155 Hickory Street in Hyden, KY. The service will begin at 1:00 PM - Friday - October 13, 2023 with Donnie Melton and Doug Caldwell officiating. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. - Thursday - October 12, 2023 at the Dwayne Walker Funeral Home, The interment will follow the funeral service at the Kilburn Family Cemetery., Wooton, KY
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Carter and Eliza Melton Kilburn, brother, Carlin Kilburn, sisters, Pam Kilburn & Andrea Melton, nephew, Elbert Melton, Jr., niece, Phyllis Melton Shepherd & great nephew, Jordan Melton
Those left to cherish Phyllis's memory include her sister, Connie Minix, and her husband, Victor of Louisa, KY; her brother Clinton Kilburn and his wife Ann of Wooton, KY; her brother Jeffery Kilburn and his wife Rhoda of Wooton, KY; her niece Candi Muncy and her husband Donny of Louisa, KY; her nephew Trevor Minix and his wife Remonica of Staffordsville, KY; as well as special great nephews Ethan Perry, Tylan Dale Perry, Teyton Minix, Caleb Jo Minix, Additionally, she is survived by her special great niece Paelyn Eliza Muncy of Louisa, KY and nieces and nephews she treasured and loved with all her heart; Shannon Caudill, Mike Melton & Jean, Randy Melton & Karri, Carter Allen Melton & Samantha, Doug Melton & Betty, Carlin Kilburn & Michelle, Pam Kilburn Kemper & Harry, Tim Kilburn & Tammy, Tom Kilburn & Karen, and a host of other great nieces and nephews. Phyllis also leaves surviving; her best friend, Glenna Burwick.
The following will serve as pallbearers, Ethan Perry, Ty Dale Perry, Trevor Minix, Tom Kilburn, Tim Kilburn, Donny Muncy, Teyton Minix and Joe Minix.
