**Courtesy Obituary**

Thomas Edgar Prater, age 84, of Somerset, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, at his residence. 

Tom was born on September 27, 1935, in Hyden, Kentucky, son of the late Hiram and Ruth Stidham Prater.  He married Carol Osborne on December 15, 1962, in Hyden.  Tom earned his Master’s Degree in education at Eastern Kentucky University and did post graduate work at Miami University of Ohio. Tom spent his working career investing in Ohio and Kentucky’s youth, teaching, serving as a Vice Principal, Principal and an Athletic Director; then devoted his “spare” time to coaching youth sports and being a Boy Scout leader.  Tom had previously served as an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Somerset.  He was a former member of the Somerset Kiwanis and the Lions Club. 

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Carol Osborne Prater; his daughter, Nicole Prater, of Somerset; his granddaughter, Brittany Ferrell; his grandson, Tommy York; and his sister, Betty Carole Lewis, of Wooton, Kentucky. 

Preceding Tom in death are his parents; and his brothers, Cova Prater and Taylor Prater. 

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2020, at 1:00 p.m., in the chapel of Somerset Undertaking Company, with Pastor Andrew Bowman officiating. Interment will be in Somerset Cemetery. 

Visitation will be Thursday, after 11:00 a.m., in the funeral home chapel, until time for services. 

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Somerset, 200 North Vine Street, Somerset, KY 42501.
