William J. "Bill" Wooton

Mr. William J. "Bill" Wooton born March 25, 1934 departed this life on Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care in Hazard, Ky.  He was 88 years old.  Bill was born at Wooton, Ky., the son of the late Monroe Wooton and Molly Melton.  Bill received a bachelors degree from Morehead State University and a Masters' degree from Union College.  He was very athletic in high school and college.  Bill lettered in both basketball and baseball at Leslie Co. High School.  He was a member of the 1953 boys' basketball team which was defeated by Hazard in the regional final.  Bill's athletic career continued at Morehead State, where he was a member of the cross county track team.  He earned 3rd place honors in the Ohio Valley Conference track championship.  Bill served honorably in the U.S. Army, where he received the honor of sharp-shooter. Bill had a very distinguished career in education.  He taught 34 years in the Leslie County School System.  He was a charter member of the Wooton Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Wooton, Ky.  Bill was an avid sports fan especially, University of Ky. basketball, he also enjoyed, reading, hunting, fishing, hiking and identifying the different species of trees.  Bill's greatest joy came from spending time with his family.  Mr. William J. "Bill" Wooton was preceded in the death by his loving and devoted wife, Ruby Campbell Wooton, his parents, beloved son, Paul Wooton, brothers, Ott Wooton & Russell Wooton, sisters, Hazel Jean Estridge and Margaret Crouch. Mr. William J. "Bill" Wooton leaves the following relatives surviving, two cherished sons, Kenneth Wooton of Wooton, Ky., Errol Wooton and Glennia of Whitesburg, Ky., two cherished daughters, Margaret Wooton of Wooton, Ky. & Joyce Combs of Wooton, Ky., his long time companion, Betty Orberson of Wooton, Ky.,  one brother, James Harold Wooton of Indianapolis, Indiana, 14 treasured grandchildren, Kimberly Padget, Anthony Combs, Angela Wooton, Wendell Wooton, Johnny Baker, Rebecca Couch, Caitlin Baker, William Wooton, Kara Bowling, Damon Wooton, Sarah Bailey, Leah Combs, Darrell Wooton, Elizabeth Wooton and a host of treasured great-grandchildren, other relatives and friends.  You may offer your condolences to the family @dwaynewalkerfuneralhome.com
